Early Signs Your Child May Need Speech Therapy

It’s amazing to watch your little one say their first words, right? Mama and dada are moments you never forget. If you are worried to see your child isn’t talking as much as other children of his age, it could be a negative sign.

Recognizing early signs of speech issues can really help them communicate and feel good about themselves later. Let’s see what to watch for and when to talk to a speech therapist.

Why Catching It Early Is a Good Idea

Kids pick up language at their own pace, but there are some things they should be doing that give us a clue on how they are. Finding any issues early is key because speech problems can sometimes cause trouble with learning in school or making friends. If you catch it early, you can usually fix it, so your child can talk clearly and without feeling awkward.

Possible Signs Your Child Could Use Some Speech Help

Speech therapy isn’t just for kids who don’t talk. It can help with a bunch of different talking problems. Here are some things that might mean your child could use some extra support.

1 – Not Many Words for Their Age

Kids usually start saying around 10–20 words when they’re about 18 months old. By age two, they usually know over 50 words and start stringing them together, like saying want juice. If your kid isn’t picking up new words often or mostly just points, maybe talk to someone about it.

2 – Hard to Understand

Kids mess up words all the time, that’s totally normal. But, say folks who aren’t related to you can’t get what your three-year-old is saying, it might be good to get it checked out. If they’re struggling with some sounds or dropping parts of words, it could be a speech thing.

3 – Does Your Child Get Annoyed When Speaking?

Children who find it difficult to express their emotions or communicate properly, they usually get annoyed. If you notice your little prince or princess finds it difficult to choose proper words to express emotions, he needs professional help.

You can’t ignore your child’s struggle to express himself. Instead, you should learn how to help him to get rid of the same.

4 – No Gestures or Interaction

Normally, children start showing their gestures or nodes even before they speak words. If you notice that your child isn’t making proper eye-contact while calling his name, or he isn’t expressing gestures etc., it means he is developing communication skills slowly.

So, it could be one of the early signs that indicate your child needs speech therapy or other professional help to learn how to communicate. You shouldn’t ignore it as it could be a sign of autism.

5 – Stuttering or Repeating Sounds

Kids often stutter, mostly when super excited. But when you notice that your child has been struggling with the same issue for more than 6 months, you need to seek professional help. If your child keeps stuttering even after the expected time frame, he needs speech therapy instantly.

6 – Doesn’t Get Simple Instructions

Usually when you interact with your two-year old baby, he is likely to follow your easy instructions such as hand me your book. But when your child struggles with such a simple instruction, you must consult a professional.

What Should I Do When I Discover These Signs?

If you have already noticed this stuff, no stress! Children usually grow up at their specific natural speed. But still, it’s a great idea to consult a professional as soon as possible.

Early speech therapy can –

  • Help your child talk better
  • Make them feel more confident and less upset
  • Help them make friends easier
  • Keep them from having trouble with reading and other learning later on

You can start by talking to your doctor. They might send you to a speech therapist who can check out your child and make a plan to help them.

Helping Your Child at Home

Therapy is useful, but parents can really help kids learn to talk too. Here are some things you can do.

  • Chat with your kid a bunch and let them know what you’re up to.
  • Read books together daily, even if they just check out the pics.
  • Singing songs helps them pick up new words.
  • Go outside with your kid to help him to learn new words on his own.

Do Something Now

Think your kid’s having trouble talking? Getting them checked out early can really help. Speech therapy can change things for the better, helping them find their voice and do better at school and with their friends.

I am very happy with the progress my son Dhyan has made after starting physiotherapy at RDCC. Dhyan is 14 months old, and he started his physiotherapy sessions at RDCC on 18th August. When we first came to RDCC, he did not have proper sitting control. He was not placing his feet properly on the floor and was also unable to stand even with support. His trunk control was also very limited. After around 12–13 physiotherapy sessions, we have noticed a very positive improvement in his overall motor abilities. His sitting control has improved significantly, he is now able to stand with support, and he has started placing both feet properly on the floor. We can also see improvement in his trunk control and overall stability. As parents, seeing these changes in such a short period has given us a lot of happiness and confidence. We are very satisfied with the physiotherapy sessions and the way Dhyan is being handled with patience, care, and proper attention. A very special thanks to Dr. Niyati for her dedication, hard work, patience, and continuous efforts toward Dhyan’s progress. She has been very supportive and attentive throughout his therapy sessions, and we truly appreciate the care she provides. We are really happy with Dhyan’s progress and thankful to the RDCC team for their support and guidance. We would definitely recommend RDCC and Dr. Niyati to parents who are looking for professional and compassionate pediatric physiotherapy care. ❤️

Finding the right center was really overwhelming for us, but coming to RDCC made a big difference. The facility is clean, calm and well kept, but what really stands out is how polite and patient the staff and therapists are. We have been there for Occupational Therapy of our child and we've noticed clear, steady improvements in him over time. The therapists genuinely care about the progress. I'm Grateful for their treatment and support.

I had brought my cousin to RDCC Vadodara for ABA therapy, and I am extremely happy with the progress we have seen. The improvement has been amazing, and we can genuinely see a positive change in her overall behaviour and skills. The therapists are very supportive, patient, and dedicated towards the child. They understand the individual needs of the child and work with a lot of care and consistency. The staff is also very cooperative and approachable. I am truly grateful to the entire RDCC Vadodara team for their efforts and support. I would definitely recommend RDCC to parents and families looking for quality therapy and professional guidance for their children.
